My name is Joseph Mathew. I am the son of Mathew Joseph Paramel (Mathachan), and the
grandson of late P.M. Joseph (Calcutta Joseph). As a proud member of the Knanaya Catholic
Community,I have always held the Church and the Clergy in the highest regard. Also, I am sure
you are aware of my family's unquestionable loyalty and contributionto the Church andthe
clergy, beginning with my grandfather who helped Mother Teresa start her first school for poor
children in our home in Calcutta, and continuing with my father. Having been mised in a farnily
where the Church and its clergy are held in the highest regard and reverence, it is with deep
sadness and exfteme disappointrnent that I write this letter.
My law firm was approached by Joemon James (Thundathil) who requested our help regarding a
problem with his wedding, which is to be held at St. Teresa's Church in Houston on Saturday,
October 6,2012.As he described his situation, f was not only saddened, but also shocked by his
story.
Joemon and his fianc6, Jainy's, story is one which should be full of happiness. Instead, it has
become one of frustration and sorow.
It began when Joemon requested a letter from Father lllikunnumparth. This letter was required
for Joemon to get married at the St. Theresa's church. In order to receive this letter, though,
Father Illikunnumparth demanded the outrageous sum of $3,000. When Joemon questioned the
demand for the $3,000, he was told that such 'voluntary donations' were required of all couples
seeking such a letter, and that this money would go toward the new building construction fund.
When Joemon brought this incident to the attention of Father Illikunnumparth's superiors,
Joemon was told by Bishop Angadiath and also by Fr. Illikunnumparth that they would give him
the letter and that he could proceed with the wedding preparations.
After many months and multiple attempts to get in touch with both Bishop Angadiath and Fr.
Illikunnumparth, Joemon and Jainy still have not received the letter they were promised months
ago. Prepantions forthe wedding, which is less than two weeks away,have aLlbeen finalized.
However because Fr. Illikunnumpantr has refused to provide the letter, the wedding cannot take
place.
As such, I am proud to represent Joemon and Jainy in this legal matter. The pre-suit notice
which is attached to this letter outlines the legal recourse we are pursuing. We expect to receive
the lefter that was promised to Joemon and Jany by 5PM on Thursday, Septernber 27, 2012. If
the letter is not received by this time, my frm will have no other option but to proceed with a
lawsuit against you.

My friends, why kccna needs to get involved with the wrong party? If they have no membership in Knanaya church they have just no right to demand anything not even a Kuri. That is the bottom line. If they were just people they should have marriage solomnized by the latin church, if they refused they should have gone after latin. Here they went after poor malayalee priest. The truth is that they have no membership in latin either, they want to get everything free, it is the land of free according to thundum family

ReplyDeleteThese are the usual simple terms used by a third class advocate to terrorise the opposite party. There are even stronger words like writ of certiorari, writ of mandamus, criminal trespass, criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and so on. If it was felt by the plaintiff that there was violation of legal right, then suitable damages also should have claimed. But no such claim in this pre suit notice. No mens rea is established. If we approach Hon'ble courts without sufficient locus standi, the court may award cost on the plaintiff also.

The mission lawyer very clearly explained to us that she told babu mulayanikunnel to wait for two months to get the order from the court to declare paster the owner of the church as bankrupt. Then the bank will put this church in the market and if iam involved i will buy it for 1.2 million half of the price we actually paid.Then my son told the lawyer knanaya people are dump they don't have any brain. i came to know all these things after we close the church. I send a legal letter to conduct a general body , and send a letter to bank only give permission to withdraw the money after we have general body meeting, but babu and jayachan team mislead achan and he annoucned in the church i give letter to stop the loan process. I read two letter in our town hall meeting its clearly states that what was my intention. i have several proof with the talk with bank manager. My only intention was to have a good church with co-operation and friendship with all the families in houston. I can easily achieve my goal but some of the black sheep in our community play double game, otherwise we will have a church in our community center or a good church in another place. our misssion lawyer done this kind of business several of them and save their clients millions of dollars she have several proof. ReplyDeleteThe laity has set high expectations for the priests/bishops and still blindly believes the Kerala Christian Churches have a strong spiritual foundation and did not notice it replaced by Hard Cash. As good Christians and Knanaya members, it is extremely important we do our very best to Bring back Jesus to the churches and strengthen our faiths. Make Churches the temples of spirituality not casinos and centers of materialistic mockery.
Looking at the issue, I noticed few troubling problems
1.The family was going to Latin Church avoiding the mission
• Why this is happening to families? Why many families are forced to stay away from our missions?
• Can we do something to make the Church change to avoid losing such families? Don’t expect next generation to come to our churches if we don’t force change.
2. Church leaders playing indirectly the role of Pontius Pilot, allowing the Pharisees and the tax collectors to extort and disgrace families denying sacraments.
Some Facts:
• We all know there are extremely good priests/people who are struggling, as they have to support such injustice.
• When an issue comes we express our emotion through few emails and conversations contributing nothing to the future of the community. It creates a short term repulse but nothing for the future.
• Many leaders were never honest or could not implement their ideas because of the structure of the Church and the dynamics of our community where laity has ‘Zero’ power.
• Throughout the church history there was/is an almost an equal number of people who supports church on whatever they do and another group that oppose the church for anything and for no reason. Majority are the ones like many of us, who don’t interfere in both but regular church goers, who go on with their lives and do not want to be part of the nasty politics and dirty campaigns.
• Church Leadership hates Media that questions their authority (Blogs, emails etc)
• Church is vulnerable/scared to Legal Challenges and crumbles even to a legal notice.
How do the believers approach this?
We have the moral obligation to force the church to come to reality, focus more on spiritual needs and little less on commercial aspects. It is important the church leadership have an unselfish focus on the communities growth blended with spirituality. Unless there is a fear factor, church leadership will not change for good.
As a humble beginning
1. Have a Face Book page where such incidents, actions, outcomes are recorded and controlled by a team consisting of people, who went through such experiences. This should include only denial of Sacraments and not generic issues.
2. Have a volunteer legal team as a support group for the community members. Of course this team is only there to make sure the sacraments are not denied and nothing else. If other issues are addressed, that will defeat the purpose.
The intention of the above is not to threaten the church but to protect members, and avoid church becoming too much materialistic forgetting the members. A positive change in the church will increase the confidence of members in the church, and we can go back to a period, where members rich or poor are treated the same by the church strengthening church in every way.
As we wait for the Hurricane Sandy to pass over our heads, hoping it will turn to a tropical storm that wash our cities and the streets of its dirt; let us pray the waves created by the current issue will strengthen our faith, church and the community.

If Jesus is the truth even his disciples ran away after his crucifix, after he rise again and walk with them and give courage. Then they came back and preach the gospel. Even achan came to our house and explained everything , that lot of people mislead him and if he listen our words our community never split and we can have a nice church. He even didn't know the bankruptcy situation of the church.

1. Have a Face Book page where such incidents, actions, outcomes are recorded and controlled by a team consisting of people, who went through such experiences. This should include only denial of Sacraments and not generic issues.
2. Have a volunteer legal team as a support group for the community members. Of course this team is only there to make sure the sacraments are not denied and nothing else. If other issues are addressed, that will defeat the purpose.
The intention of the above is not to threaten the church but to protect members, and avoid church becoming too much materialistic forgetting the members. A positive change in the church will increase the confidence of members in the church, and we can go back to a period, where members rich or poor are treated the same by the church strengthening church in every way.
