Dear Fr. Mutholath,

It has been brought to the attention of KCCNA executive committee that under your guidance and initiative there is a movement going on to acquire a church for the Syro-Malabar Knanaya Catholic Mission in Chicago. As you are aware the Knanaya Catholic community in Chicago had several opportunities in the past to acquire a church from the Archdiocese of Chicago. However, it decided not to go for it as yet. The community’s decision not to acquire a church was guided by their

stead fast belief and determination that an acquisition of a church before a clear understanding and assurance from the hierarchical authorities regarding the membership in our Knanaya missions would be detrimental to the community's interests, customs and traditions as well as its existence and continuity. In addition you are also aware that if a Church is acquired now, it would be the property of the Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago.

The recent developments in Chicago with respect to the acquisition of Church also contradict the decision of the North American Knanaya community not to cooperate with Chicago Syro-Malabar diocese until our demands for true Knanaya missions are met. With respect to acquiring buildings, our Bishops have advised on several occasions that “We must build community centers and associations must own them so that it will remain with the community and missions must sign leases to conduct mission activities”. As you are aware, this is the practice in Houston.

In his most recent interviews published in Malayalam Newspapers in North America, His Excellency Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry made it very clear that if we build churches in North America, it will naturally belong to the Eparchial Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiyath. This further authenticates the fear of the Knanaya Catholic Community members that the acquisition of any property, including Church, under the Knanaya Mission would in effect be a drain on the hard earned dollars of our community members. We strongly believe that these kinds of initiatives would further weaken our effort to achieve a “true Knanaya Mission” and put un-necessary strain on our community members to spend millions of dollars and can only cause further division in the community.

We the executive committee members of KCCNA are convinced that under the current circumstances, all initiatives with respect to the acquisition and establishment of Knanaya churches under the Chicago Syro-Malabar Diocese is against the best interests of the Knanaya Catholic Community in North America. Therefore, as the elected executive committee of the National Association of our community, we strongly urge you to discontinue all initiatives for acquiring a Church which will undermine the unity and interest of the community members. In your capacity as the Spiritual Director of the Knanaya Catholic Community in Chicago we believe that you could be instrumental in assisting the Knanaya Catholic Society of Chicago to acquire a multipurpose community center. We are certain that you could make the necessary arrangements with the Knanaya Catholic Society of Chicago to conduct spiritual activities as per the earlier directives of our Bishops.
